The second was the Red Vineyard in Arles, which in turn is the only painting Van Gogh has sold in the course of his life, the sale of Starry Night was made shortly after his death.

According to some analyzes, Starry Night is interpreted as a picture of human mortality

According to this interpretation, the cypresses in the painting are symbols of death. According to others, the image refers to the description of the apocalypse of St. John, or that it is a symbolic representation of the night in Gethsemane. For others, it is a reflection of the artist's restless emotional state and the shock he experienced not long before.

The painting can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York

The MMoA got it into its collection in 1941 after the death of Lillie P. Bliss, the daughter of an American art collector who also traded in textiles.

Van Gogh didn't like this picture

The artist perceived it as an unsuccessful work, in one of his letters he wrote "in fact, the only works that I consider to be however successful are Wheat Field, Orchard Mountains, Olive Trees with blue hills, Portrait and Entrance to the Mine, the rest are not for worth nothing. ?

The starry night is probably a view from the window of a mental asylum

Van Gogh found himself in the workhouse of St. Paul in Saint-Remy in 1888 after suffering a nervous breakdown that cut off his ear. Immediately after arriving, he began painting a picture. The view from the window inspired him to paint many works, perhaps parts of the view were included in this work as well.

The picture was not shown to the public for the first time until 1905
