Image history
The Starry Night is one of the artist's two paintings that were sold
The second was the Red Vineyard in Arles, which is the only painting sold during Van Gogh's lifetime, the sale of The Starry Night was made shortly after his death.
According to some analyses, Starry Night is interpreted as a painting about human mortality
According to this interpretation, the cypresses in the painting are symbols of death. According to others, the image refers to the description of the apocalypse of St. John, or that it is a symbolic representation of the night in Gethsemane. For others, it is a reflection of the artist's uneasy emotional state and the shock he experienced shortly before.
The painting can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York
MMoA got it for its collection in 1941 after the death of Lillie P. Bliss, the daughter of an American art collector who also dealt in textiles.
Van Gogh didn't like this painting
The artist perceived it as a failed work, in one of his letters he wrote "all in all, the only works that I consider successful are Fields of Wheat, Orchard Mountains, Olive Trees with Blue Hills, Portrait and Entrance to the Mine, the rest are not for worth nothing to me?.
After his death, the painting went to his sister-in-law
Johanna van Gogh-Gezina Bonger, wife of Wincent's brother, took over Starry Night and later sold the painting to the poet Julien Leclerq.
Art historians cannot recognize which town the painter portrayed in the painting
Some say it's a French village, others say it's his native Netherlands.
There is a second version of Starry Night
A year earlier, the painter painted the original version of the painting, entitled Starry Night over the Rhône, the artist was fascinated by capturing the starlight reflecting in the river.
Planet Venus
is placed in the imageThe artist called it the morning star, in fact that star is Venus. The painting, despite its expressive nature, reflects the actual state of the sky. He also included the Milky Way on it.
The starry night is probably the view from the window of a mental asylum
Van Gogh found himself in the St. Paul's Church in Saint-Remy in 1888 after he suffered a nervous breakdown that caused him to cut off his ear. As soon as he arrived, he began painting the picture. The view from the window inspired him to paint many works, perhaps he also included fragments of the view in this work.
The painting was shown to the public for the first time in 1905
So almost 20 years from the time of painting and at the same time 15 years after Van Gogh's death. Previously, the painting was exhibited in the private gallery of the artist's brother and at the same time his art dealer - Theo, viewed only by his friends.
